reclaiming the globe

No, literally reclaim vintage globes. I have been inspired lately by maps and vintage globes. I think there is nothing more timeless than a piece of decor that has both form and function. Besides, having a globe around the house makes me want to dream about travel and exploration. I remember as a kid spinning a globe, closing my eyes, and shoving my index finger down on the spinning sphere to stop it. Where my finger rested was the spot I would live someday. Was I just a weird kid or do any of you remember doing that?  So this morning, over a cup of steamy coffee, I went on the hunt for a few inspirations on useful ways to repurpose vintage globes. Here are my favorites.

Just joined a linked in party at The Twice Remembered Cottage!

I love these pendant lamps! What I really love is the finishes. The inside has an antique gold and bronze faux-finish.  The edging is trimmed in leather. And, it has been finished with an acrylic spray so it shines like a new penny!

globe-clock

A spherical clock is clever enough, but a reclaimed globe makes this even better!

Left: I don’t know which I like best, the “wall of globes” clock, or the mid-century sling chair. I think Jess might have told you about my fetish for furniture. Alas it is true.

Right: Another clever interpretation of a globe light. I love the vintage bronze fixtures. I am a little curious though at how much light this might provide with the small opening.

Or you could use them as decorative bowls. What I love about these is that you could create the whole look with reclaimed materials. You can line the inside with either old newspapers or maps, and use a cake stand or candle holder for the base.

How about turning an old globe into the classic piggy bank for the little saver in your family?

chalkboard-globe

I saved my favorite for last. Jaimee Rose recently wrote a post about “chalkboard-themed goodies.” How awesome would a chalkboard painted globe be in a a kids room? Too fun!

Of course, you don’t have to repurpose globes to make them look great. Check out these examples of using vintage globes in a grouping.

Again,  I face the decision….do I like the vintage globe vignette in the corner, or the mid-century furniture best. For me this one is a no brainer. How can you not love the Eames plaid egg chair?

Hope you enjoyed! Which one was your favorite?

See you soon.

Thanks for stopping by and for the tweet! Isn’t it funny how much kids like them. When Mr. M wrote this I was like “yah, I used to play that same spinning game!” Its odd to me how kids in two different states learn and do the same things at the same stages!

We have some similar, but EVEN better posts coming up! Check back soon! PS: I posted your tweet on my FB. Haha

Great post. I’ve been looking for vintage globes for about a year now but most of the ones I see are in pretty bad shape so I don’t buy them. Maybe I need to get past that and just buy them anyway! I’m never quite sure what makes them vintage as opposed to just an older beat-up globe :) I see plenty of newer plastic lopsided ones too! Thanks for the good inspiration.

Kathy…we haven’t given them a ton of thought either but after doing this post it has us on the lookout. The great thing is that they don’t have to be perfect. Most of these examples have you covering up the blemishes in some way or another, whether it be painting or cutting it in half.
